The Lech Walesa Airport (GDN) is located 12 km northwest of the center of Gdansk, the largest city and the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The airport is named after Lech Walesa, the former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who was born and lived in Gdansk. The airport serves over 5 million passengers annually, connecting them to more than 100 destinations in Europe and beyond.

History of the Gdansk Airport

The airport has a long and rich history, dating back to 1919, when the first passenger flights were operated from an airfield in the Wrzeszcz district of Gdansk. The airport was then known as Danzig-Langfuhr Airport and was an important international hub that connected four countries and provided transport facilities between Polish cities. During World War II, the airport was used by the German air forces and was heavily damaged by Allied bombings. After the war, the airport was rebuilt and resumed its civilian operations

In 1974, a new airport was opened in Rębiechowo, a village near Gdansk, replacing the old one in Wrzeszcz. The new airport had a modern terminal building, a longer runway and a control tower. In 1993, the airport was renamed Lech Walesa Gdansk Airport, in honor of the leader of the Solidarity movement that contributed to the fall of communism in Poland. In 2012, a new terminal was inaugurated, doubling the airport's capacity and offering more comfort and convenience to passengers.
